Annual Fundraisers: What’s coming up…
Fall Season Ergathon
Each year Capital Crew hosts a fundraiser in early November known as the annual “Erg-a-thon”. In addition to the Booster Club’s Membership dues, this event has been the bulk of our fundraising initiatives. Both the Varsity and Novice athletes participate in the Erg-a-thon.
The annual Ergathon is held in early November as the major fundraising program sponsored by the Boosters Club. Both Varsity and Novice athletes participate in the Ergathon. The funds generated by this one-time event support purchasing new boats, oars and other equipment needed to keep our program competitive!
“Ergs” are stationary rowing machines that measure the time, power and meters each athlete rows. The team goal is to row 1,000,000 (over six hundred miles) in seven hours! The Ergathon is Capital Crew’s major fundraising event with a goal to raise $60,000 for this year. Squads will be competing against each other to see who can bring in the most money. Although each athlete pays fees covering basic costs, fundraising offsets expenses incurred with travel to regattas and enables the upgrade and acquisition of new equipment that keeps Capital Crew competitive.
Spring Season World Record Fundraiser
There is an ongoing battle in the rowing club world to set and hold the world record for Large Team Longest Continual Row. Teams must have an erg in continuous use for an extended period of time to set the record. You can find out who is the current world record holder by visiting the Concept2 website here (hint it’s not Capital right now). Capital Crew accepts this challenge and has a great time doing it, occupying the erg loft over spring break. The athletes are both exhausted and exhilarated during this exciting fundraiser. The entire event is streamed live, allowing viewer to see the athletes taking their turns rowing and supporting each other.
What does the money go toward?
The funds generated help Capital Crew Boosters Club purchase and/or provide:
- new boats
- food (breakfast and lunch)
- hospitality tent for parents at major regattas
- reductions in costs for the travel teams (hotels, airfare, food, vans)
